The Facts
Tom Sachs will open '31 Rue Cambon,' an immersive installation recreating the Chanel flagship boutique in Paris, at his SoHo studio on Centre Street on September 11, 2026, during New York Fashion Week. The installation, built with a team of about 20 people, includes a re-created storefront with cardboard awnings and wrought-iron gates bearing Chanel's interlocking Cs, plus a mirrored entrance hall and a showroom stocked with handbags, shoes, jewelry and Chanel suits handmade from cardboard, paper, plywood and broken glass. Sachs plans to keep the exterior covered with butcher paper until the opening, saying, 'I think shock and awe is best.'

The work extends Sachs's four-decade engagement with consumer culture, transforming luxury goods into handmade objects that highlight branding and labor. By opening directly from the street during New York Fashion Week, the project turns his studio into a public stage, giving collectors and visitors a close view of the artist's process in his working environment.
