Partnership Uffizi Galleries

On June 29, 2026, the Uffizi Galleries in Florence and the National Museum of Korea in Seoul signed a formal agreement to foster cultural exchange and sharing. The document was signed in the Uffizi Library by Simone Verde, Director of the Uffizi Galleries, and You Hong June, Director of the National Museum of Korea, during an institutional visit by President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea. President Lee, accompanied by First Lady Kim Hea Kyung, Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun, and Ambassador Kim Choon-goo, toured the museum's collections, including works by Giotto, Botticelli, and Leonardo, as well as the recently restored Niobe Hall. Emilia Gatto, Italy's Ambassador to Korea, also attended the signing.

The Signal

This agreement signals a strategic deepening of cultural diplomacy between Italy and South Korea, positioning both institutions to share collections, expertise, and programming. For the Uffizi, which has been actively expanding its global partnerships, this aligns with Director Verde's vision of a more internationally engaged museum. The National Museum of Korea, one of Asia's leading museums, gains a significant European partner, potentially opening the door for future loan exhibitions that could bring Old Master works to Seoul. Collectors and curators should watch for joint exhibitions and research initiatives, which could increase cross-cultural visibility for both institutions.
