Uffizi Galleries Announces Death of Art Historian and Donor Detlef Heikamp
The Uffizi Galleries announced the death of Detlef Heikamp, a scholar of Mannerist sculpture and Medicean collecting. Heikamp, who collected works himself, donated many pieces from his own holdings to the museum. Director Simone Verde called him a tutelary presence for the institution and said a study day will be organized in his honor. Heikamp's 1972 essay Mexico and the Medici was cited as an example of his early global approach to research.
The Signal
The death of Heikamp removes a key figure whose research connected Italian collections to wider international contexts. Curators working with Medici-era holdings may continue to draw on his publications for frameworks that extend beyond national boundaries. The planned study day offers a venue for assessing how his methods have shaped ongoing scholarship in the field.
