The Uffizi Galleries has placed the Adam and Eve panels by Lucas Cranach the Elder at the center of its new Flemish Masters rooms on the second floor. The German painter created more than 50 versions of the subject with his collaborators. Although conceived as separate works, the panels were designed to be viewed together, each showing half of the Tree of Knowledge. A new ebony-style frame with protective glass now reconstructs the original single unit and aligns the figures' glances and gestures.

The Signal

The installation underscores the Uffizi's ongoing focus on Northern European holdings and clarifies the intended visual relationship between the two works for visitors. For curators and collectors it demonstrates how reframing and room redesign can restore historical viewing conditions without altering the paintings themselves. The move also positions the panels as a key reference point within the museum's expanded presentation of 16th-century art.
