The Facts
On October 21, 2026, the Walker Art Center announced the presentation of Rwandan-British dancer, singer, and choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza in her solo work Toi, moi, Tituba…, running October 28–30 at 7:30 pm in the McGuire Theater. The piece summons the story of Tituba, an enslaved woman among the first accused in the Salem witch trials, using neon beams, shadow play, and emotive vocals. Munyaneza activates a shared space between audience and performer by seating a limited-capacity group onstage, reshaping the conventional performer-audience relationship. The work is part of the Walker's Performing Arts Season 2026–27.
The Signal
Munyaneza, based in Marseille and originally from Rwanda, has been called “one of the most impressive voices of contemporary performing art in Europe today” by Zürcher Theater Spektakel. Her multidisciplinary practice — combining dance, music, text, and visual imagery — explores memory, erasure, and embodied histories. Toi, moi, Tituba… premiered in 2023 and joins a repertoire including Samedi Détente and Unwanted. The artist received the Salavisa European Dance Award in 2024 and has been an associate artist at Théâtre la Ville – Paris and Théâtre National de Chaillot. The Walker’s intimate staging underscores a growing institutional commitment to performance works that address historical trauma and reframe audience engagement.
