The Facts

On September 8, 2026, the Walker Art Center announced River Mouth, Unseen Green, an exclusive two-night musical collaboration led by guitarist and composer Nels Cline and producer and multi-instrumentalist Yuka Honda. The performances take place September 24–25 at 7:30 pm in the McGuire Theater, featuring shifting ensembles of musicians including Julian Lage, Shara Nova, Glenn Kotche, Anthony Cox, Theo Bleckmann, and Jason Lindner. The first evening, led by Cline, presents a kaleidoscopic program blending punk, jazz, electronica, and experimental composition. The second evening, led by Honda, includes a full preview of her and artist Glenn Kaino’s forthcoming opera I Am Yoko, inspired by Yoko Ono’s life and legacy, followed by a live improvised soundtrack to Ono and John Lennon’s avant-garde film Fly (1970).

The Signal

The collaboration brings together two influential figures in experimental music—Cline, a longtime member of Wilco, and Honda, cofounder of Cibo Matto—for a rare joint project at a major multidisciplinary institution. For collectors and curators, this signals the Walker’s ongoing commitment to adventurous cross-genre performance and the enduring relevance of artists like Yoko Ono, whose work is central to Honda’s new opera. The event also highlights a network of collaborators who move fluidly between indie rock, jazz, and avant-garde circles, reflecting a broader trend toward interdisciplinary, artist-driven programming in museum contexts.
