Whitney Museum Opens New Dining Spaces Featuring Commissions by Rashid Johnson and Dyani White Hawk
The Whitney Museum opened a new flagship Frenchette Bakery location in its redesigned ground-floor restaurant space in November 2023 as part of a reimagined food and beverage program. The bakery provides grab-and-go baked goods along with a full-service cafe offering pizzas, soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, desserts, and a selection of wine, beer, and cocktails. The museum also created Studio Bar in its eighth-floor cafe space, which serves sweet and savory snacks with coffee, wine, and beer. Both spaces feature newly commissioned artworks, including an installation by Rashid Johnson on the ground floor and a monumental mosaic tile work by Dyani White Hawk on the eighth floor.
The Signal
The commissions integrate contemporary art directly into visitor amenities at the Whitney, aligning food service areas with the museum's core mission. This approach provides collectors and curators with additional contexts for encountering works by established artists while expanding the institution's support for new production beyond traditional galleries.
