The Facts

On October 1, 2026, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) announced the opening of IMPRINT, the latest iteration of the Koyo Kouoh Atelier. The exhibition brings three Cape Town-based publishing collectives—(B)andWi(d)th, Medupi Publishing, and Creative Knowledge Resources—as residents in the museum's second-floor gallery. Co-curated by Nathalie Viruly and Dr Greer Valley, with support from Bulelwa Kunene, Angela Muritu, and Emme Pretorius, IMPRINT runs from October 2, 2026 to April 2, 2028 on Level 2 Elevator Side. The collectives use the space as a site of production and experimentation, structured in six-month iterations that include xeroxed readers, reading groups, debates, and a collaborative curatorial project called The Daily.

The Signal

By centering publishing—particularly self-publishing and multiple voices—rather than a single artist, the Atelier challenges the museum's primary exhibitionary impulse and treats critical cultural production as central. The residency's long duration and emphasis on radical informality signal an institutional strategy to prioritize editorial and self-instituted forms over traditional hierarchies. For collectors and curators, this move underscores a growing trend among museums to support collective, process-based practices that foreground community engagement and alternative modes of knowledge circulation.
