Zona Maco 11th Edition Draws International Galleries to Mexico City
The 11th edition of the Zona Maco art fair took place in Mexico City, switching its dates from April to February. The fair featured a solo project by local artist Adriana Lara at New York's Algus Greenspon, and a booth by Mexico City's House of Gaga reprising a group show of New York artists including Bill Hayden, Mathieu Malouf, Sam Pulitzer, and Antek Walczek. The opening party at Televisa San Ángel studios drew over a thousand guests. A satellite event, the Material Art Fair, offered curated presentations from galleries such as Lulu, Regina Rex, and Yautepec. An exhibition by Swiss-born artist Ugo Rondinone opened at Museo Anahuacalli, featuring granite stick-figures and two massive golems, "The Static" and "The Serene."
The Signal
Zona Maco's shift to February signals a strategic move to avoid scheduling conflicts with other major fairs, though the fair's strength remains tied to Mexico City's cultural appeal rather than its organizational efficiency. The Material Art Fair's tighter curation and focus on emerging spaces like Lulu and Regina Rex highlight a growing appetite for more cohesive, artist-driven presentations in the region. Ugo Rondinone's exhibition at Diego Rivera's Museo Anahuacalli underscores a trend of contemporary artists engaging with pre-Columbian contexts, offering collectors a unique dialogue between ancient and modern aesthetics.
