Artcurial Launches 'Dialogues' Series Pairing Contemporary Porcelain by Liu Wenqi with Song Dynasty Works
Artcurial's Asian Art department is inaugurating the curatorial cycle “Dialogues — Echoes of the Classical and Contemporary Perspectives” with an exhibition of twelve porcelain works by Chinese artist Liu Wenqi. The presentation places the artist's pieces in dialogue with Qingbai porcelains from the Song dynasty offered in the house's Asian Art auction on June 9, 2026. Liu Wenqi, born in Shanghai in 1985 and based in Paris, trained at the Shanghai Academy of Film Arts and Studio Berçot before turning to independent practice in 2018; she is represented by Galerie Capazza and has works in the collections of the Musée Joseph-Déchelette in Roanne and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The Signal
The project signals Artcurial's intent to position contemporary Asian makers alongside historical material in its sales, offering collectors a framework for assessing how material, glaze, and light function across centuries. For curators and institutions, the inclusion of Liu Wenqi's work alongside Song dynasty examples underscores the continuing institutional interest in artists who treat porcelain as a site of sensory and temporal inquiry rather than purely decorative production.
