Bonhams to Auction Imperial European Silver and Meissen Porcelain in Paris Classics Sale
Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr will hold its Classics auction in Paris on 22 April featuring an exceptional collection of early Meissen porcelain assembled in East Asia including pieces from the personal collection of Augustus the Strong Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Highlights include a rare Meissen Augustus Rex celadon-ground baluster vase and cover circa 1727-30 estimated at €50,000-80,000 and a pair of large silver five-light candelabra by Jean-Charles Cahier Paris 1819-1838 estimated at €150,000-200,000 from the former collection of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich at Pavlovsk Palace. Additional lots comprise a silver-gilt and champlevé enamel wine set by Pavel Ovchinnikov Moscow 1873 estimated at €30,000-40,000 and a large 15th-century Hispano-Moresque armorial basin estimated at €80,000-120,000.
The Signal
The sale represents the first auction of a private Asian collection of European porcelain at Bonhams underscoring sustained collector demand for objects with documented imperial provenance from both European and Russian courts. Items such as the Cahier candelabra and Ovchinnikov wine set illustrate the market premium attached to documented royal commissions and historical services that survived 20th-century dispersals. The estimates position these works as benchmarks for similar 18th- and 19th-century European silver and porcelain entering the secondary market.
