Bonhams to Sell Contents of Glyn Cywarch, Welsh Seat of Lord Harlech, on March 29, 2017
Bonhams will offer the contents of Glyn Cywarch, the Welsh seat of Jasset Ormsby Gore, the 7th Baron Harlech, in a single-owner sale on March 29, 2017, at its New Bond Street saleroom in London. The sale comprises more than 400 lots, including important furniture, Old Master paintings, a historic library, antique jewellery, silver, works of art, and a vintage motor car and motorcycle. Leading items include a set of seven George III giltwood armchairs in the manner of Robert Adam (estimate £50,000-80,000), a painting by Jan Frans van Bloemen (£25,000-35,000), and a 'barn find' 1936 Lagonda Rapier sports tourer (£20,000-25,000). The library features books personally inscribed by Jackie Kennedy, reflecting the family's close friendship with President John F. Kennedy.
The Signal
The sale is being held to raise funds for the restoration of Glyn Cywarch, which Lord Harlech inherited on the death of his father in February 2016. Lord Harlech has put his film production career on hold to focus on the property, stating, "Just as my family collected fine art and antiques over the generations, it now feels the right time to find a new generation of collectors to enjoy them." For collectors, this sale offers a rare opportunity to acquire pieces with deep aristocratic provenance, from a historic Welsh estate, with estimates that may appeal to both seasoned and new buyers. The mix of high-end furniture, Old Masters, and automotive memorabilia signals a strategic approach to maximizing returns for the estate's restoration.
