Contemporary Artist Pat Steir Dies at 87, Hauser & Wirth Announces
Hauser & Wirth announced the passing of New York-based artist Pat Steir shortly before her 88th birthday. Steir is survived by her husband Joost Elffers and niece Lily Sukoneck-Cohen. The gallery extended condolences to her family and recognized the dedication of her longtime studio team Liam van Loenen, Alexis Myre and Shaun Acton.
The Signal
Steir rose to prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s and developed the Waterfall series in the late 1980s. Her work entered permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Tate. Posthumous exhibitions are scheduled at Museum Voorlinden from September 2026 through March 2027 and at the Parrish Art Museum in May 2027.
