Berlinde De Bruyckere is a Belgian contemporary artist, born in Ghent, Belgium. She studied at the Sint-Lucas School of Arts in Ghent and the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. Her breakthrough came in the 1990s with her sculptures that evoke the human body, often using wax, a material that carries a sense of fragility and mortality.
Her signature works include suspended horse carcasses and human figures, such as Hanne (2011) and Kreupel (2012), which are rendered in wax, wood, and other materials. These pieces draw on religious imagery, mythology, and the Flemish Renaissance tradition, exploring themes of existence, raw emotion, and the physical and spiritual vulnerability of the body.
De Bruyckere's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and in major museums. Recent coverage on The Cultural Signal highlights her inclusion in the Mia Van Hool collection, which is set to be sold at Christie's in Paris in December 2026, underscoring her continued relevance in the contemporary art market.
