The Facts
On November 6, 2026, Galerie Max Hetzler announced a series of acquisitions, exhibitions, and publications for André Butzer. Works by the German artist have entered the permanent collections of the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, and the University of California, Merced. His painting Untitled (Fränzi), created for his 2023 retrospective at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, has been installed in the museum's permanent collection. Butzer's work is featured in exhibitions at MUZEU in Braga, the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Bremen, and the Rubell Museum in Miami. New publications include the monograph Die Jahreszeiten / The Seasons, released in October 2025, and See The Vision from M. Books, alongside the fourth volume of his collected writings.
The Signal
The breadth of activity across US and European institutions underscores Butzer's growing institutional recognition. The Thyssen-Bornemisza acquisition positions him within the Expressionist lineage he cites. The concurrent release of multiple publications consolidates his artistic legacy, providing scholarly context for his evolving practice.
