The Facts

On July 22, 2026, Galerie Max Hetzler announced that Carroll Dunham is the subject of two major museum exhibitions. A survey at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, presents over 50 works from 1983 to the present, charting the evolution of his iconography and including new works depicting the artist's studio as a meditative space. A solo exhibition, "Carroll Dunham: Drawings, 1974–2024," at the Art Institute of Chicago is the first museum presentation focused exclusively on his drawings, featuring many making their public debut. The gallery also released two publications: a monograph titled "Studio on Another Planet" with text by Naomi Fry and an interview by Matthew Ritchie, and a volume covering Dunham's "Green Period" (2018–2022), which uses green as a pictorial tool to explore intimacy, race, sex, and aging.

The Signal

The dual museum shows and accompanying publications highlight Dunham's sustained institutional recognition and provide a comprehensive view of his career across painting and drawing. For collectors, the focus on his drawing practice and the isolated "Green Period" offers entry points into less documented aspects of his work. The ICA Miami survey, spanning four decades, reinforces Dunham's position as a key contemporary figure whose allegorical and psychological themes remain relevant, while the Art Institute show signals institutional commitment to his graphic oeuvre.
