The Facts
Ryan Gander will present the fourth edition of his public art project 'The Find' in Seoul from August 31 to September 10, 2026, marking its first realization in Korea. Organized with Lisson Gallery, the British Embassy Seoul, Seoul Tourism Organization, Gangnam-gu Office, and Laurence Geoffrey’s, the project coincides with Frieze Seoul (September 2–5). Gander will hide 16,000 specially designed coins in publicly accessible areas including Euljiro, Hannam, Cheongdam, Samcheong, and parts of COEX. Each coin functions as a collectable artwork and decision-making tool, embossed with a piece of wisdom. Originally commissioned in 2023 by Factory International for the Manchester International Festival, 'The Find' has previously been staged in Cáceres, Spain (2024) and Okayama, Japan (2025).
The Signal
The Seoul iteration treats the city as both medium and platform, inviting participants to explore through chance encounters. For collectors and art-world visitors attending Frieze Seoul, the free coins offer a tangible, participatory artwork that challenges conventional notions of value and exchange. Gander’s project extends the gallery’s engagement with public art and experiential practice, while aligning with Seoul’s strategy to activate urban spaces during the fair. The coin hunt encourages a renewed sense of discovery, turning everyday city navigation into an artistic encounter.
