The Facts
On October 29, 2026, Galerie Max Hetzler announced Edmund de Waal will appear with writer Max Porter at Conway Hall, London, on November 2, 2026, for The How To Academy. The talk will explore de Waal’s creative lessons and his grandmother’s relationship with Rainer Maria Rilke, who mentored her in 1920s Vienna. De Waal will also join Aurora Orchestra and BBC Singers for 'Where Memory Sings' at King’s Place, and his book 'How to Begin' has been published. His solo exhibition 'the eight directions of the wind' has opened at The Huntington in Los Angeles, and 'Library of Exile' will become part of the Warburg Institute, with nearly 2,000 books from the installation going to Mosul University Library. France has named him Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
The Signal
The breadth of projects positions de Waal as a rare figure moving between literature and visual art. The Huntington exhibition and Warburg gift give collectors a concrete framework for his practice, tying intimate objects to exile, migration, and memory. His rising institutional profile and French recognition signal long-term art-historical standing, while the Mosul donation underscores the social dimension of his work.
