The Facts
On October 13, 2026, Galerie Max Hetzler announced a wave of Matthew Barney presentations, headlined by an eight-hour screening of 'River of Fundament' at Masonic Hall in New York with New People's Cinema Club and Unsound New York. The 2014 film gets its second New York outing. Barney's works also appear in the Gwangju Biennale, where his rarely screened video 'SCABACTION' (1988) is included; in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg; in Hamburger Bahnhof's 30th-anniversary show in Berlin; in Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo's new Venice venue; and in Fondation Cartier's Paris survey, which presents nearly 600 works by more than 100 artists.
The Signal
The coordinated rollout shows Galerie Max Hetzler positioning Barney across institutions from a Venetian island to the Rocky Mountains, reinforcing his standing as a central figure in contemporary practice. The rare screening of 'SCABACTION' and the monumental 'River of Fundament' could sharpen collector interest in early and project-based works, a part of the oeuvre that has been harder to access.
