The Facts

On October 13, 2026, Galerie Max Hetzler announced a broad slate of Matthew Barney presentations across North America, Europe, and Asia. Barney was inducted as an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters at its annual ceremonial in May 2024. His eight-hour film River of Fundament (2014) will screen at Masonic Hall in New York, marking only the second New York presentation since its 2014 world premiere. Works appear in the 16th Gwangju Biennale, "You Must Change Your Life," including his rarely screened first video SCABACTION (1988); in "Exposition générale" at Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris, opening from October 25; and in "A Thousand Times Berlin" at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, alongside Katharina Grosse and Thomas Struth. Additional presentations take place at Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo's new Venice venue, Isola di San Giacomo.

The Signal

The breadth of this program — a biennale inclusion, a new Venice foundation space, a Berlin museum anniversary show, and the Academy honor — reflects sustained institutional demand for Barney's work. For collectors, the rare New York screening of River of Fundament and the public showing of SCABACTION offer access to his earliest, least-seen chapters. The Fondation Cartier's exhibition, drawn from a collection dating to 1984, also cements his place in a four-decade institutional canon.
