The Facts
On November 4, 2026, Getty announced a talk and tasting with chef Bricia López at the Getty Center on November 15, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. Titled 'Recetas oaxaqueñas y memoria con Bricia López,' the event will feature mole, chocolate, mezcal and other Oaxacan dishes as López discusses how family recipes function as a living archive. The program coincides with the museum's photography exhibitions 'Instante/revelación: momentos en la fotografía mexicana' and 'Cada minuto es historia: cinco miradas sobre Los Ángeles.' López, whose family opened the Los Angeles restaurant Guelaguetza in 1994, recalled a home in Mitla, Mexico, where an altar held food rather than photographs because the family lacked a camera.
The Signal
López's framing of recipes as portraits of family and tradition extends Getty's engagement with photography into culinary memory, treating food as an archival medium in its own right. For audiences, the event positions Oaxacan cuisine as a dynamic cultural record, while the venue choice signals Getty's investment in Los Angeles' immigrant foodways. López is at work on a third cookbook devoted to Día de Muertos traditions.
