The Facts
On November 5, 2026, the J. Paul Getty Museum announced “Instante/revelación: momentos en la fotografía mexicana,” an exhibition at the Getty Center on view through January 3, 2027. Curated by Julieta Pestarino, assistant curator of photography, the show examines how Mexican photographs reveal what can escape a first glance, drawing on works by Rodrigo Moya, Flor Garduño, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Graciela Iturbide, Cecilia Salcedo Méndez and Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Among the highlights are Moya’s 1957 photograph of Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, made when he was 23, and Iturbide’s “Mujer ángel” (1979), an image she discovered after the fact and included in the photobook “Los que viven en la arena.” Many of the works, including those by Garduño and Álvarez Bravo, come from the Getty’s collection as gifts of Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser.
The Signal
The exhibition frames Mexican photography as more than documentation, emphasizing how images from the 1920s through the 2000s carry political, poetic and personal tensions. For collectors, it signals the Getty’s deepening engagement with Latin American photography, a field of growing institutional and market interest. The Rivera-Siqueiros portrait also offers a vivid reminder of how closely Mexican modernism was tied to ideological debate.
