The Facts

On November 3, 2026, the Getty Museum published a curator-led selection of food-related objects from its holdings across paintings, drawings, manuscripts, and decorative arts. The anchor is Pieter Claesz.'s Still Life with Assorted Fruit (about 1622), a new addition to the museum's Dutch paintings collection that sets medlars beside grapes, cherries, and hazelnuts. Other picks include Joris Hoefnagel's Medlar, Poppy Anemone, and Pear illumination (1561–62, illuminated 1591–96), Jacopo Ligozzi's Allegory of Gluttony (1590) from his Seven Deadly Sins series, an Ottonian Last Supper (about 1030–40) bearing one of the earliest depictions of a pretzel, and a four-inch Moustiers faience mustard pot (1745–49) painted by Jean-François Pelloquin.

The Signal

The Claesz. panel is the substantive news: it extends the Getty's build in Dutch still life and gives it a canonical fruijtagie. For collectors, the signal is scholarly depth: an obscure fruit like the medlar, or a Ligozzi sin drawing whose siblings sit at the Louvre and National Gallery of Art, is what institutions trade on when they want a collection narrative rather than a single trophy.
