The Facts
On September 9, 2026, the Getty Villa announced a specialty cocktail called El Cosmico, created for the Latino Theater Company's production of 'Antigone: In the Language of Kings.' The drink features agave wine, a fermented beverage with roots in Aztec mythology, and is part of the concessions menu for the play, which runs Thursday–Saturday, September 10–October 3, 2026, at the Villa. The cocktail was developed by Bon Appétit sommelier Kristin Nuss Farrand and includes pineapple juice, orange juice, cucumber ribbons, and a tajin rim. A nonalcoholic version using agave Seedlip is also available.
The Signal
The cocktail's use of agave wine, historically tied to pulque—a sacred Aztec beverage made from maguey sap—underscores the production's reimagining of Sophocles' tragedy in pre-conquest Tenochtitlan. This pairing of culinary and theatrical programming reflects the Getty Villa's strategy of embedding cultural context into visitor experiences, linking ancient Mesoamerican traditions with contemporary performance. For collectors and curators, the initiative highlights how institutions are increasingly using food and drink as interpretive tools to deepen engagement with historical narratives.
