Kelly Akashi to Debut Glass Chimney Sculpture at 2026 Whitney Biennial Following Loss of Home and Studio
Artist Kelly Akashi will present a major new sculpture, 'Monument (Altadena),' at the 2026 Whitney Biennial opening March 8 in New York. The 13-foot glass brick structure is a replica of the chimney remaining from Akashi's Altadena home and studio, which were destroyed in the January 2025 Eaton Fire. The installation, located on the Whitney Museum's fifth-floor terrace, consists of 1,359 glass bricks and a metal armature weighing approximately 6,550 pounds.
