The Facts
On October 13, 2026, KM21 announced it will present the first major solo exhibition by British-Nigerian artist Karimah Ashadu in the Netherlands. The exhibition, running from October 24, 2026 to April 11, 2027, will feature two monumental moving-image works: MUSCLE (2025) and Plateau (2021–22). These films, set in Nigeria, explore themes of labor, patriarchy, and independence. Ashadu, who lives between Hamburg and Lagos, was awarded a Silver Lion at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024.
The Signal
The exhibition marks a significant institutional milestone for Ashadu, whose practice combines film, photography, and sculpture to address postcolonial narratives. For collectors, it signals her rising market standing following the Venice Biennale honor. The focus on Nigerian labor and diaspora themes aligns with a broader curatorial interest in African contemporary art in European institutions.
