Kunsthaus Zürich Reports 513,162 Visitors in 2024, Reduces Deficit, Secures CHF 30M Endowment
The Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland’s most-visited art museum, drew 513,162 admissions in 2024, according to the annual general meeting of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft held on May 26, 2025. Members re-elected Dr. Philipp Hildebrand as chair and Dr. Conrad Ulrich as board member for further three-year terms. The institution reduced its annual deficit to CHF –1,529,489 from CHF –1,585,979 in 2023, roughly 50% better than budgeted. In October 2024, the Kunstgesellschaft applied for an additional subsidy from the City of Zurich, with a decision expected in summer 2025. Separately, the museum announced a CHF 30 million endowment from Marianne and Martin Haefner, establishing a foundation to fund at least one major international exhibition annually.
The Signal
The endowment, structured through the 'Foundation for Major Exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich', is open to contributions from other donors, reflecting the museum’s long-standing public-private financing model. The Kunsthaus aims to balance its budget by 2027 while growing private income through new partnerships and fundraising. The financial stabilization effort is critical as operating costs have risen sharply since the museum’s extension opened. The Zurich City Council’s pending subsidy decision will test the viability of maintaining equal public-private footing, a model that has underpinned the institution’s cultural prominence for over a century.
