Kunsthaus Zürich Reports 539,500 Visitors in 2025, Second-Highest Attendance in History
Kunsthaus Zürich attracted over 539,500 visitors in 2025, the second-highest attendance in its history, making it the most visited art museum in Switzerland. The Marina Abramović exhibition drew nearly 120,000 visitors, the museum's most successful show in twelve years. The collection itself accounted for around 247,800 visits. The museum also reported a net loss of CHF 1.43 million for 2025, an improvement from CHF 1.53 million in 2024, helped by a one-time artwork sale whose proceeds were allocated to the collection fund per ICOM guidelines. Earned income remained stable, with ticket revenue of CHF 5.59 million and fundraising of CHF 4.85 million.
The Signal
The sustained high attendance underscores the museum's broad public relevance and cultural role, even as it faces structural cost pressures from operating its expanded premises. The museum's application to the city of Zurich for increased subsidies, submitted in October 2024, remains pending. The creation of the PerArte Stiftung by Marianne and Martin Haefner signals a new private funding vehicle for major international exhibitions. For collectors and curators, the strong visitor numbers for both a blockbuster solo show and the permanent collection suggest that Zurich's audience rewards ambitious programming, while the financial gap highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing institutional growth with sustainable public-private funding models.
