The Facts
On October 13, 2026, Lafayette Anticipations announced “Towards a Sea”, the first institutional solo exhibition in France by Japanese painter Yu Nishimura. On view from October 21, 2026, it brings together some fifty drawings and paintings created over the last decade, including pieces made for the show. Curated by Elsa Coustou, the exhibition explores Nishimura's engagement with the landscape and the sea, interweaving human and animal figures with plant and mineral motifs. Working in oil and tempera, Nishimura uses photographic and cinematic effects to create dreamlike works in which imagination and reality overlap.
The Signal
The exhibition marks a significant institutional step for Nishimura, placing a decade of production in dialogue with Western pictorial genres of portraiture, landscape and still life. With the artist represented in Paris by Crèvecœur, the debut could reinforce collector interest in his meditative, film-inflected painting and underscore the continued market momentum for contemporary painters who blur memory and observation.
