The Facts

Lehmann Maupin artist Tammy Nguyen will debut her new aria "Timaeus and The Teacher: Foreword" as part of the closing program of the 61st Venice Biennale. The 45-minute performance, composed by Neely Bruce and choreographed by Jamal Jackson, features tenor Brian Vu. Commissioned by Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts, the work explores themes of freedom and nationhood through fractalized national anthems and a Fibonacci-based libretto. It will be presented at the Arsenale on November 13 and 14.

The Signal

The work extends Nguyen's practice into opera, building on her earlier exhibition at the Sarasota Art Museum that examined "Flags of Convenience" and the fluidity of national borders. The Biennale's closing program, curated by Koyo Kouoh, highlights the growing role of performance within major exhibitions. For collectors, Nguyen's Biennale inclusion and this multidisciplinary commission underscore her institutional validation and could strengthen her standing among artists working across visual art and music.
