Lehmann Maupin Now Represents Korean Avant-Garde Artist Sung Neung Kyung
The Facts
Lehmann Maupin has announced the representation of Korean artist Sung Neung Kyung, whose interdisciplinary practice spans over five decades and has influenced performance, Conceptualism, and politics. Sung was a member of the avant-garde collective Space and Time, active during South Korea's politically turbulent 1970s and 1980s. His work will be featured in the group exhibition "Experimental Art in South Korea, 1960s-70s" opening at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) in May, then traveling to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in September, and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in early 2024. The gallery will also present historical works by the artist at Art Basel Hong Kong (Booth 1C16).
The Signal
The addition of Sung Neung Kyung to Lehmann Maupin's roster signals the gallery's deepening engagement with pioneering Asian conceptual and performance artists. Sung's practice, which uses his body as a medium and often critiques institutional spaces, offers collectors access to a critical lineage of Korean avant-garde art that has been historically underrepresented in Western markets. His inclusion in major institutional exhibitions, including a traveling show from MMCA to the Guggenheim and Hammer, positions him for expanded international recognition. For collectors, this represents an opportunity to acquire works from a foundational figure whose market in Europe and the Americas is still developing, potentially offering value growth as institutional awareness increases.
