The Facts

Lempertz announced its Old Masters and 19th Century auction, scheduled for November 21, 2026. The sale will reunite two panels from a Johann Koerbecke altar wing that were separated in 1936: the Annunciation (est. €200,000–300,000) and the Vision of St Bernard (est. €200,000–300,000). Other highlights include Ambrosius Benson's 'Madonna and Child' (est. €220,000–280,000) from the A. Alfred Taubman collection, a rare late work by the Master of Frankfurt (est. €60,000–80,000), and Goossen van der Weyden's 'Rosary Madonna' (est. €180,000–220,000). The auction also includes two works from the circle of Tilman Riemenschneider, a limestone Virgin and Child from northern France, c. 1325/1350, and a landscape by Jacob Philipp Hackert.

The Signal

The reunification of the Koerbecke panels, previously displayed at Kolumba and the Bavarian State Painting Collections, offers a rare market opportunity for a historically significant work divided for nine decades. The sale reflects sustained demand for Old Master works with notable provenance, museum exhibition history, and cultural cross-currents, such as the van der Weyden Madonna with Iberian links. For collectors, these lots combine art-historical rarity with documented preservation of lost landscapes, as in Hackert's view of the drained Lago di Bientina.
