Lisson Gallery Announces ArtReview Podcast Featuring Saudi Venice Biennale Representative Dana Awartani
On February 26, 2026, the ArtReview Podcast released its inaugural episode in which artist Dana Awartani speaks with editor-in-chief Mark Rappolt. Awartani, a Saudi-Palestinian artist living between New York and Jeddah, addresses decolonising art education, the preservation of craft traditions and cultural destruction in the Middle East. She works in painting, installation, video and mosaic, incorporating techniques from traditional Islamic arts. Her exhibition Standing by the Ruins was presented at Towner gallery in Eastbourne and previously at the Arnolfini in Bristol; she will represent Saudi Arabia at the 2026 Venice Biennale.
The Signal
The episode positions Awartani’s practice within wider discussions on cultural heritage and institutional representation, signalling increased visibility for artists from the Gulf working at the intersection of tradition and contemporary discourse. For curators and collectors, the conversation highlights how established platforms are amplifying voices focused on regional preservation efforts ahead of major international exhibitions.
