The Facts

On October 27, 2026, Lisson Gallery announced that the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, reopens October 31, 2026, after a four-year revitalisation led by artist and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto. The most significant rethinking of the campus since it opened in 1974, the 1.3-acre project adds monumental dry-stacked stone walls, new entrances and overlooks, and nearly 30,000 plants and trees. The redesigned Garden and Plaza will present 60 artworks, a 50 percent increase, from Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and David Smith to contemporary works by Yoko Ono, Mark Grotjahn, Raven Halfmoon and Pedro Reyes. The reopening also coincides with Yoshitomo Nara: Sentinels of Stillness, an exhibition of monumental aluminium figures on the West Lawn, and a free public celebration on October 31.

The Signal

The project positions an artist-architect as the shaper of a major institutional landscape, expanding Sugimoto's practice beyond photography and reflecting a curatorial turn toward experiential sculpture. The inclusion of Raven Halfmoon and Pedro Reyes underscores the Hirshhorn's efforts to broaden its canon with contemporary Indigenous and Latin American voices, while the 60-work display strengthens the garden's appeal on the National Mall.
