The Facts

The Musée du Louvre will open 'Louvre Photo', an exhibition exploring the museum's relationship with photography, running from November 4, 2026 to May 3, 2027. The show features more than 300 photographs of the Louvre—its artworks, galleries, open spaces, visitors, and staff—spanning from the invention of photography to the present day. It draws on the Louvre's own photographic archives as well as collections from the Musée d'Orsay, the French National Library, and other institutions, and includes photographic commissions from the early 2000s. The exhibition is part of the French Ministry of Culture's Photography Bicentenary label and is designed by Juan-Felipe Alarcón with graphic design by Atelier Pierre/Pierre.

The Signal

By turning the camera on itself, the Louvre positions its own image as a subject of artistic and historical inquiry, reflecting the museum's evolution from palace to institution and its role in major events like the Paris Commune and the World Wars. For collectors and curators, the exhibition underscores the value of institutional photographic archives as both documentary records and creative resources. It also ties into the broader bicentenary celebration of photography, reinforcing the Louvre's centrality to the medium's history in France.
