Luma Foundation Unveils Gerhard Richter Outdoor Sculpture 'STRIP TOWER' in Engadin

The Luma Foundation has installed "STRIP TOWER (962)," a large-scale outdoor sculpture by Gerhard Richter at Lake Silvaplana in Sils Maria, Engadin, Switzerland. The work, on view from January 2026 for an initial period of three years, is part of the foundation's ongoing project Elevation 1049, extending its program into the Alpine landscape. Based on Richter's Strip Paintings from 2010, the sculpture consists of eight interlocking panels clad in brightly striped ceramic tiles, rising over five meters to form a cross-shaped interior that visitors can enter. The work explores the artist's engagement with painting, photography, digital processes, and abstraction translated into three dimensions, set against the Alpine surroundings Richter has visited regularly since 1989.
