The Facts

On October 16, 2026, Lyon & Turnbull announced that a rare lantern designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Miss Cranston’s Ingram Street Tearooms in Glasgow sold for £609,850, more than twenty times its £20,000–£30,000 estimate. The lantern was auctioned on October 15 during the second day of the two-day Design Since 1860 sale in Edinburgh and online, which achieved a premium-inclusive total of over £1.6 million. It is believed to be one of only five known complete examples, with the rest held by Glasgow Life. A stained-oak ladderback chair for Miss Cranston’s Willow Tearooms, made around 1903, fetched £82,800 against a £10,000–£15,000 estimate and came from the collection of the late Glasgow architect Eric Sloane. A Mackintosh folio of designs for a House for an Art Lover sold for £6,900.

The Signal

The results underscore sustained demand for Mackintosh works defined by rarity, originality, and strong provenance. The lantern’s price, roughly twenty times its estimate, signals that exceptional examples can outperform guide values by a wide margin. For collectors, the sale highlights Lyon & Turnbull’s Edinburgh saleroom as a key market for Scottish design, with interest spanning furniture, lighting, and works on paper.
