Exhibition M+

The Facts

M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, will open "Herzog & de Meuron: In Focus" on September 12, 2026, running through January 2027. The exhibition celebrates the museum’s fifth anniversary and marks the second phase of a major donation from the architectural firm that designed the M+ building. It traces Herzog & de Meuron’s evolving vision through ten key projects in China from 2002 to 2021, including M+ itself, Tai Kwun in Hong Kong, and the National Stadium in Beijing. The display features over two hundred process materials—models, drawings, material samples, and prototypes—presented in replicas of the wooden vitrines used for the firm’s Kabinett archive in Basel, Switzerland.

The Signal

The donation strengthens architecture as a core pillar of M+’s collection, following an initial 2023 gift of a section model of the Beijing National Stadium. By focusing on built and unbuilt projects across China, the exhibition illuminates Herzog & de Meuron’s deep engagement with the region’s urban transformation and technological evolution. For collectors and curators, the show offers rare insight into the firm’s design methodology, positioning process materials as valuable artifacts that reveal the decision-making behind landmark cultural and civic projects. The open-storage display format, inspired by the Kabinett, repositions the gallery as a space for discovery, potentially influencing how architectural archives are presented in museum contexts.
