The Facts

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is hosting the most comprehensive Martin Puryear exhibition in more than two decades, with over 70 works in wood, glass, marble, cast bronze, and works on paper. The show runs September 25, 2026 through January 17, 2027, as the final stop of a tour co-organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Puryear, born in Washington, D.C., in 1941, is represented by works spanning 50 years, including drawings from his Peace Corps service in Sierra Leone and sculptures from his 2019 U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition also includes rarely shown drawings and prints.

The Signal

The survey offers collectors and curators a rare view of Puryear's full range, from intimate works on paper to monumental sculpture. His engagement with craft, African American history, and science has made him a pivotal figure in contemporary sculpture, and this critically acclaimed institutional tour reinforces his standing. For the High, hosting the exclusive Southeast venue deepens its postwar American art program.
