The Facts
Lyon & Turnbull will sell a pioneering print created by David Hockney on his iPad and signed in pencil in its inaugural Prints/Editions sale in London. The work, "Oranges (iPad Drawing No 643)", from Hockney's 2011 still life series, carries an estimate of £40,000 to £60,000. It was originally purchased from Pace Gallery in New York by a private UK collector. Hockney died in June 2026 at age 88. The sale also features highlights including a Rembrandt etching, "The Three Trees", which sold for £225,200 last year, and works by Old Masters and Modern artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Edvard Munch, and Pablo Picasso.
The Signal
The auction marks Lyon & Turnbull's entry into a dedicated prints market, reflecting growing collector demand. Kirstie Davidson, recently appointed to head the new prints department, noted that Hockney's iPad drawings are highly sought-after and that prints offer an accessible gateway for new collectors. The sale spans from Old Masters to contemporary works, underscoring the medium's broad and enduring appeal.
