The Facts

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York will present "nowhere," a daily dance performance by choreographer Sarah Michelson, from September 15 to October 11, 2026. The work, performed by Michelson alongside a rotating cast of dancers, will take place in the Donald and Catherine Marron Family Atrium, which the artist will treat as her daily workspace. The exhibition is organized by Ana Janevski, Curator, and Martha Joseph, Associate Curator, with Sibia Sarangan, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Media and Performance, and produced by Kate Scherer and Olivia Rousey. "nowhere" was partially developed during a Studio Residency at MoMA in 2024, with additional residency support from institutions including the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Danspace Project, and David Zwirner.

The Signal

For collectors and curators tracking the intersection of dance and visual art, Michelson's MoMA residency and subsequent exhibition signal the museum's continued investment in live performance as a core curatorial medium. The daily, durational format—open Saturday through Thursday—positions the atrium as a site of ongoing creative labor rather than a static display, a model that may influence how institutions program performance. Michelson's 30-year career, rooted in rigorous choreography and recent expansions into painting and video, underscores a broader trend of dance artists gaining institutional visibility in museum contexts, from MoMA to the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
