The Facts
On September 8, 2026, Kataoka Mami, Director of the Mori Art Museum, was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Republic. A joint investiture ceremony with artist Shiota Chiharu, appointed Officier, was held at the Residence of the Ambassador of France to Japan, with Ambassador Béatrice Le Fraper du Hellen presenting the insignia. The French Ministry of Culture recognized Kataoka for her contributions to contemporary art and cultural dialogue, including curating the Shiota Chiharu: The Soul Trembles exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris and launching a curator exchange pilot program with the Centre Pompidou through Japan's National Center for Art Research. The honor was announced by the Mori Art Museum on September 11, 2026.
The Signal
The appointment places Kataoka among a select group of Japanese museum leaders recognized by France; former Mori Art Museum Director Nanjo Fumio was appointed Officier in 2016, and founding chairperson Mori Yoshiko received the Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 2013. For collectors and curators, the award signals France's continued investment in Asia-Pacific cultural diplomacy and underscores the Mori Art Museum's role as a bridge between Japanese and European contemporary art scenes. Kataoka's upcoming leadership of Roppongi Art Night 2026, which will feature French art curated by José-Manuel Gonçalvès, further cements this institutional strategy of cross-border programming.
