The Facts

The Musée d'Orsay holds Eugène Carrière's 1885 oil painting 'L'Enfant au verre' (The Child with a Glass), measuring 61.5 by 50.5 cm. The work was donated by Louis-Henri Devillez in 1930 and was previously housed at the Musée du Louvre before being transferred to the Musée d'Orsay in 1977. The painting is not currently on display at the museum. It has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including a 1907 retrospective at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a 1949-1950 show at the Musée de l'Orangerie, as well as a multi-venue American tour titled 'Eugène Carrière 1849-1906, Seer of the Real' from 1968 to 1970.

The Signal

Carrière, a French Symbolist painter known for his monochromatic, misty portraits and domestic scenes, occupies a distinct position between Impressionism and early Modernism. The painting's presence in the Musée d'Orsay's collection underscores the institution's commitment to preserving lesser-known 19th-century French artists whose work bridges stylistic movements. For collectors, Carrière's market remains niche but stable, with his intimate family subjects appealing to specialists in Symbolist and fin-de-siècle art.
