The Facts
On November 1, 2026, the National Gallery in London announced an exhibition pairing Helen Frankenthaler's 'Hint from Bassano' (1973) with Jacopo Bassano's 'The Flight into Egypt' (about 1544–45), on loan from the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. The free exhibition will run from June 17 to September 5, 2027, in the H J Hyams Room. Frankenthaler's five-metre-wide acrylic painting was directly inspired by Bassano's oil canvas, which she first encountered and sought to emulate through colour and stroke. The exhibition continues the National Gallery's partnership with the Norton Simon Museum, following previous loans including Zurbarán's still life in 2026.
The Signal
The display is part of the National Gallery's Project Domani series, which explores artists' engagement with art historical tradition. By juxtaposing a 16th-century Venetian biblical scene with a 20th-century American abstract response, the exhibition highlights how contemporary artists reinterpret old masters. The show will travel to Pasadena from September 24, 2027, to January 10, 2028, accompanied by a catalogue co-published with the Norton Simon Art Foundation.
