Obama Presidential Center to Feature Commissions by Theaster Gates, Richard Hunt, and Julie Mehretu

On June 4, 2026, the Obama Foundation announced that the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago will open with three major art commissions. Richard Hunt’s sculpture 'Book Bird' will be installed in the Library Reading Garden, while Theaster Gates will debut an installation for the Hadiya Pendleton Atrium. Julie Mehretu’s 83-foot-tall glass window, 'Uprising of the Sun', will be featured on the north façade of the museum building. The center is scheduled to open on June 19, 2026.
