Osman Hamdi Bey Painting Sells for £3.7M at Bonhams 19th Century Art Sale
Osman Hamdi Bey's Cami Kapisinda achieved £3,678,400 at Bonhams' 19th Century Paintings and British Impressionist Art sale on 25 March at Bonhams New Bond Street, London. The painting, estimated at £2,000,000-3,000,000, was the top lot in the 72-lot sale that totaled £6,326,238 and came to auction for the first time after direct acquisition from the artist in 1895. Other results included William Adolphe Bouguereau's Fardeau agréable at £508,400 and Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret's La Vaccination at £368,700.
The Signal
The result underscores sustained collector demand for rare Orientalist works with documented provenance from the artist, particularly those bridging Ottoman and European markets. For institutions and private buyers, the unbroken chain from the 1891 Berlin exposition through the University of Pennsylvania highlights how such pieces can reinforce academic and diplomatic ties, potentially supporting further acquisitions in the category.
