Exhibition Lisson Gallery

The Parrish Art Museum will present "Tony Bechara: An Artist of Many Worlds" from June 27 to November 1, 2026, the first comprehensive survey of the Puerto Rican artist (1942–2025). Featuring over fifty works spanning six decades, the exhibition includes archival drawings, artist-made color formulas, photographs, and ephemera. The survey is timed to the one-year commemoration of Bechara's passing and is accompanied by an independently published monograph with an essay by Domitille d'Orgeval and an interview between Bechara and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Bechara, who was based in New York City, drew on his bicultural upbringing and studies in law and international relations to develop a career-long dedication to color theory and abstraction.

The Signal

The exhibition frames Bechara's unifying pictorial strategy as an expression of "the pursuit of happiness," proposing his contributions as a Latino/Hispanic artist strengthen the broader fabric of American art and culture. For collectors and curators, this survey solidifies Bechara's standing as a significant figure in post-war abstraction and color theory, offering a rare opportunity to assess his full career trajectory. The timing, coinciding with the anniversary of his death, may also signal renewed market interest in his work, particularly as the monograph and archival materials provide deeper scholarly context.
