The Facts

On October 28, 2026, Phillips announced it will present "Artists of the Upper East: Independence & Resonance in a Contemporary Context" at Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li, from November 10–12, 2026, during Shanghai Art Week. The exhibition features more than 20 works by four Beijing-based contemporary Chinese artists—Xu Hualing, Shen Liang, Shen Ling, and Wang Yuping—who are members of the same extended family. Works span the 1990s to the present and include ink and colour on silk, oil pastel on handmade paper, and oil on canvas. A VIP preview takes place November 10, with public viewing on November 11–12.

The Signal

The show underscores Phillips's growing emphasis on the market for contemporary Chinese art, using its Living Art partnership with Capella to reach collectors outside traditional auction rooms. By grouping four artists from one family, it highlights the diversity of individual practice within a shared cultural and familial context, from Xu Hualing's contemporary gongbi painting to Shen Liang's explorations of urban memory. For collectors, it offers an intimate look at highly accomplished Beijing artists whose works reflect broader trends in Chinese contemporary painting.
