Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian Launch Menorca Artist Residency at Casa Gràcia
Artists Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian have founded the Residency at Casa Gràcia in Mahon, Menorca, Spain. The program will offer five residencies annually—three for visual artists (up to three months) and two for writers (up to six months). The residency is supported by Hauser & Wirth Menorca, an art center on Illa del Rei that opened in 2021. Applications for the 2027 calendar year are due by July 31, 2026, and an inaugural season in fall 2026 will host a grant recipient from the Institut Menorquí d’Estudis, supported by Es Baluard Museum and Hauser & Wirth Menorca.
The Signal
The residency emphasizes self-directed creative development without required public outcomes, set in a renovated 1860 building with a large studio and walled garden. Its founding by two established artists and an advisory board including Iwan and Manuela Wirth signals a growing interest in artist-led retreats on Menorca, an island that has attracted cultural activity through Hauser & Wirth’s presence. The program aims to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue and community engagement, reflecting a wider trend of galleries and artists creating residency spaces in less saturated markets.
