On September 21, 2026, the Rijksmuseum announced "New Energy," the latest edition of its annual Document Netherlands photographic commission, by Kadir van Lohuizen. The exhibition runs from October 9, 2026 to January 17, 2027, and presents nine panoramic photographs and a video installation documenting the North Sea energy transition, including offshore wind farms, undersea cable-laying, data centres, hydroelectric stations and lignite mines. Van Lohuizen obtained multiple safety qualifications to board offshore installation vessels and platforms. A companion book, "New Energy," will be published by Lannoo on November 25, 2026.

The commission continues the Rijksmuseum's practice, established in 1975, of inviting Dutch photographers to investigate current social topics, positioning documentary photography as a curatorial priority. By turning normally inaccessible energy infrastructure into a museum subject, Van Lohuizen aligns with a broader institutional turn toward climate and technology themes, giving collectors and curators a clear example of how major museums legitimise environmental reportage as contemporary art.
